Drug dosage:
The recommended Allegra dosage for children (12 years old or older) and adults is 60mg twice a day or 180mg once a day.

However, children (6-11 years old) are given 30mg twice a day. For individuals with chronic urticaria, the recommended dose for children (12 years old or older) is 60mg twice a day and for children (6-11 years old) 30mg twice a day is given. This drug is given without regard to food.

Drug Classification and Mechanism:
Allegra (Fexofenadine) is second generation anti-histamine that is given orally to treat signs and symptoms emerging because of allergic reactions.

Second generation anti-histamines such as Cetirizine (Zyrtec), Azelastine (Astelin), and Loratidine (Claritin) are similar to this medication.

A chemical responsible for the signs and symptoms of allergy reactions is histamine.

When the histamine attaches itself to the receptors, it activates it and releases chemicals producing allergy associated effects such as sneezing.

Fexofenadine blocks H1 receptor, a type of histamine receptor, thus preventing the activation of H1 receptor-containing cells by means of histamine.

This second generation drug causes lesser drowsiness than the first generation drugs because it does not enter the brain from the bloodstream.
Missed Dose:
As soon as you remember, take the missed dose. However, if it's time for the next dose, take the next scheduled dose and skip the previously missed dose. Do not double dose.

Precautions and Warnings:
If previous allergic reaction is present, refrain from taking this medication.

Prior to taking this specific medication, inform your doctor for any serious illness like kidney, liver, or heart disease. Special monitoring and dosage adjustment is done during treatment if serious illness is present.

Allegra is in pregnancy category C of FDA, meaning that it is unclear whether it would damage any unborn baby. Consult your doctor prior to drinking this medication if pregnant.

It is unknown if Allegra passes into the breast milk so inform your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Allegra is not approved for children use under the age of 6.
Allegra Side Effects:

The usual side effects include nausea or gastric irritation; these are normal and expected so no need to be worried.

Seek medical attention if experiencing serious allergic reaction such as breathing difficulty, lip, tongue, or face swelling, hives or closing of throat.

These allergic reactions are less likely so it is important to report these side effects to a physician.
