Drug Dose:
Cipro (Ciprofloxacin) is taken without any regard to food, but is recommended not to take it along with milk or dairy products or any juices fortified with calcium.
Drinking plenty of fluids must be ensured while taking this medication to prevent crystal formation in urine.
Storage:
Cipro must be stored at a room temperature and away from directly exposing to moisture, light, and heat.
This may be stored in a room temperature. Keep this medication away from children.
Missed Dose:
Antibiotics work better when the concentration of the medicine is constant in the urine and blood. Therefore, missed dose is not advisable.
If one dose of Cipro is missed, take it as soon as remembered, but if it is already time for the following dose, skip the missed dosage and go on with the previous schedule.
It is not advisable to take a double dose.
If overdose is suspected, contact medical provider immediately
Precautions and Warnings:
This medication causes light headedness or dizziness. Do not undertake activities that may require mental alertness. Alcohol intake must be avoided at all cost.
Cipro must not be used if there is known allergy to the medication or its components as well as to other types of fluoroquinolone medications.
Moreover, Cipro must also be avoided if live typhoid vaccination has recently been received or if taking other medications such as cisapride or tizanide as these would have drug interaction. The health care provider must be contacted immediately if any of these applies.
There are also medical conditions that interact with Cipro. Health care provider must be contacted if breast-feeding, planning to become pregnant or is already pregnant.
Also, if other medicines are being taken, whether it is prescribed or not prescribed, dietary supplement, or any other herbal preparation. Also contact your health care provider if there is a presence of allergy to some foods, medications or other substances.
Furthermore, conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, heart problems, arrhythmias, low levels of potassium in the blood, blood vessel problem, diarrhea, stomach infection,kidney and liver problems, increased intracranial pressure, seizure, inflammation of joint and tendons, or photosensitivity.
Some medications may have drug to drug interactions with Cipro so contacting health care provider for this info is necessary.
- Cisapride or class III or class 1A anti-arrythmics (e.g., procainamide, amiodarone, quinidine, sotalol) because of the high risk of side effects such as irregular heart beat could be increased.
- Corticosteroids (e.g., prednisone) because of the increased risk of problems in tendons.
Arsenic, Probenecid, or NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen) because they can cause seizures.
- Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin), cyclosporine, arsenic, methadone, sulfonylureas, methotrexate, theophylline, xanthenes or tizanidine because they potentiate the effects as well as the side effects of the medication.
- Hydantoins, live or oral typhoid vaccine because the effects are decreased when used together.
Cipro Side effects:
There are minimal possibilities of having side effects of this medication, but if this becomes persistent, notify your health care provider.
These are anxiety, headache, dizziness, loss of appetite, nausea, restlessness, nightmare, upset stomach, visual disturbances and vomiting.
If any of the severe side effects occur, notify health care provider immediately:
- Severe allergic reaction such as difficulty of breathing, tightness of the chest, rash, itching, hives, or tongue, mouth, face, or lip swelling)
- Jaundice
- Neuropathy
- Unusual fatigue
- Tingling sensation
- Loss of consciousness
- Mental changes; hallucination
- Behavioral changes; depression, agitation, suicidal thoughts
- Dizziness
- Hematochezia
- Chest pain
- Seizures
- Signs of infection (fever, chills,persistent sore throat)
- Easy brusing
- Increased ICP
- Stomach cramps and pain
- Moderate to severe sunburn
- Loss of appetite
- Severe diarrhea
- Oral thrush
- Pale stools
- Muscle pain
- Nervousness
