Erythromycin Dosage

Erythromycin has several forms and each of it must be taken as ordered.

It can be taken with or without food and chewable tablets must be chewed properly prior to swallowing.
Missed Dose:

It is not advisable to miss a dose of erythromycin, but if that happens, take it as soon as you remember it, but if it is almost the moment for the next dose, skip it then proceed to the regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

Storage:

Tablets and capsules must be stored in an airtight container at a room temperature and liquid preparation must be refrigerated.

Overdose:

If an overdose is suspected seek medical attention immediately.

Warnings and Precautions:

  • If symptoms are still present and not improve, contact your health care provider immediately.

  • Do not take Erythromycin if you are allergic to it or to its components.

  • Do not take Erythromycin if you are taking ergot alkaloids, QT prolonging agents, quinolones, streptoramins, sumatriptan, terfenadine, verapamil, imidazoles, HIV protease inhibitors, cyclosporine, diltiazem, cisapride, astemizole, or dofetilide.

  • There are some medical conditions that Erythromycin interact with. Inform medical provider if pregnant, breast-feeding, or planning to become pregnant.

  • Inform medical provider if taking any kind of prescription or a nonprescription medicine, dietary supplements, or herbal preparation.


There are some medications that interact with Erythromycin:

  • Rifampin or Efavirenz decreases effectiveness

  • Cimetidine, Arsenic, Diltiazem, Dofetilide, HIV protease inhibitors, imidazole, QT-prolonging agents, quinolones, pimozide, streptogramins, verapamil causes side effects like heart toxicity or irregular heartbeat when in combination with Eyrthromycin

  • Anticoagulants, aldosterone blockers, benzodiazepines, ergot alkaloids, felodipine, HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, H1 antagonists, disopyramide, digoxin, digitoxin, cilostazol, clozapine, cisparide, carbamazepine, alfentanil, imatinib, macrolife immunosuppresants, melitinide antidiabetics, midazolam, sumatriptan, phosphodiasterase type 5 inhibitors, theophyllines, vinca alkaloids, valproic acid or tricyclic antidepressants increases the risk of side effects.

Erythromycin side effects:

Consult with your health care provider if any of the side effects persist:

  • Diarrhea

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Stomach pain

  • Loss of appetite


Seek emergency medical help if these symptoms persist:

  • Severe allergic reaction

  • Dysentery

  • Hearing changes

  • Irregular heartbeat

  • Severe stomach pain

  • Jaundice

  • Swollen, or skin blisters
