Take Lexapro (Escitalopram) exactly as prescribed; do not take more or less than recommended.
The dose may be changed according to needs and for better results. Take it with full glass of water at same time each day. Read and follow the label.
Measure liquid preparation of Lexapro with marked spoon or medicine cup to acquire desired dose.
Four weeks or longer may be needed to see effects of the medication. Do not abruptly stop taking Lexapro. Store at room temperature.
Missed dose
Take it as soon as remembered, but if it is time for the next dose, skip it then proceed to the regular schedule. Do not double dose.
Overdose
Seek emergency help. Symptoms may include tremor, tachycardia, sweating, nausea and vomiting, confusion, seizure, dizziness, and coma.
Important:
- Do not take with monoamine oxadase inhibitor (MAOI). After taking MAOI, wait 14days prior to taking Lexapro.
- Suicidal ideation is usually present before taking Lexapro, regular visits to health care provider must be done for at least 12 weeks.
- Contact health care provider immediately for severe side effects.
- Pregnancy category C. SSRI causes life-threatening or serious problems in newborn babies in mothers who took Lexapro during pregnancy. Relapse of depression may be present if antidepressant is stopped during pregnancy. If pregnancy is planned or became pregnant while on treatment, consult physician immediately.
- This medication passes into breast milk and harms baby.
- Do not give this medication to children younger than 12 years.
- Do not take this medication if you are allergic to it or having any medical condition because it needs adjustments in dosage.
- Avoid taking aspirin and NSAIDS while on this medication because it increases risk for bleeding.

- Severe allergic reactions
- Mood or behavior changes
- Panic attacks
- Insomnia
- Irritability, agitation, hostility
- Restlessness
- Hyperactivity
- Severe depression; suicidal ideation
- Rigid muscles, arrhythmia, tremors, muscle excitability, sweating, high fever
- Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, anorexia, loss of coordination, gait problems
- Headache, memory problems, trouble concentrating, confusion, hallucination, seizure, apnea, fainting
Common side effects:
- Dizziness, Drowsiness
- Insomnia
- Mild nausea, heartburn, flatulence, constipation
- Weight changes
- Decreased libido, impotence, difficulty achieving orgasm
- Dry mouth, tinnitus
