Take Paroxetine exactly as prescribed at the same time each day.

Take Paroxetine orally after meals to decrease tendency of gastric upset.

Do not crush or chew, swallow whole.

Do not abruptly stop taking Paroxetine and continue to take it even after symptoms are gone. Withdrawal symptoms may be present.

Close monitoring is required. Store Paroxetine between 20-25C (68-77F).

Store away from direct sunlight, moisture and heat. Keep away from children and pets.

Drug Class and Mechanism:

Paroxetine is a part of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI).

It restores balance of serotonin, a chemical in the brain that improves mood problems.
Missed Dose:

Take the missed dose as soon as possible, but if it is close to the next dose, skip it then revert to your regular schedule.

Do not double dose.

More Information:

  • Do not use this medication if you are allergic to Paroxetine or to its component, taking monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), St. John's wort, or selegiline within the last 14 days, taking flenfluramine, serotonine norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI), tryptorphan, sibutramine, thioridazine, nefazodonem, or pimozide. This may cause a fatal disorder called serotonin syndrome.

  • This medication may cause drowsiness, do not undertake activities requiring mental alertness.

  • Effects may be felt after several weeks.

  • Children and adolescents have higher risk for suicide. Contact health care provider for any change in behavior.

  • Wait for several weeks prior to starting medication such as MAOI after taking Paroxetine. It takes a long time before complete clearance has occurred, consult with health care provider.

  • This medication may cause painful and prolonged erection even without sexual contact. Ask for treatment immediately as it may lead to permanent sexual dysfunction.

  • This medication causes harm to fetus. Contact health care provider if you become pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy. Discuss risks and benefits of pregnancy.

Common Paroxetine side effects:

  • Decrease libido

  • Drowsiness

  • Weakness

  • Constipation or diarrhea

  • Insomnia


Seek emergency medical attention:

  • Severe allergic reactions

  • Chest pain

  • Black or bloody stools

  • Unusual bleeding

  • Arrhythmia

  • Fever, chills, sore throat

  • Mental changes

  • Behavioral changes

  • Agitation, restlessness, irritability

  • Euphoria

  • Tinnitus

  • Worsening of depression; suicidal ideation

  • Visual changes

  • Stomach pain
