Take this with a full glass of water without regards to food.

Store Plavix (Clopidogrel) between 15-30 degrees C (59-86 degrees F) and away from excess heat and moisture.

Clopidogrel is an anti-platelet medication, which inhibits the clumping ability of the platelet to form a blood clot.

This medication is similar to ticlopidine (Ticlid) in its structure and mechanism.

However, clopidogrel, unlike ticlopidine, does not cause severe decrease in WBC, therefore, routine blood works in checking levels of WBC is not necessary.

There is increased risk of stroke and heart attacks for those who had previous history of heart attack or stroke and those with peripheral vascular disease. (PVD is similar to atherosclerosis or arteriosclerosis of the arteries and it occurs in the legs that cause claudication; pain in the legs when walking).

Missed Dose
Take it as soon as remembered, if it is almost near the next dose, skip it then proceed to the regular dose. Do not double dose.

More Information

• Inform your health care provider that you are taking Plavix prior to taking any kind of invasive procedures and dental work-up as it may increase risk of bleeding.


• Do not take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), or aspirin without consulting health care provider.


• Healing process and clotting time may be delayed. Inform health care provider regarding unusual bruising or bleeding.


• This is under pregnancy category C. It is unknown if this medication can harm an unborn baby. This can pass through breast milk. Discuss with health care provider regarding risks and benefits of pregnancy.


• This rarely cause thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). This is a serious condition which involves blood clots formed throughout the body. Bleeding is common due to absence of the natural platelets that are necessary for proper clotting.


• The tolerance to Plavix is similar to aspirin. In taking Plavix, rash, itching, or diarrhea occurs in 1 in 20 individuals, while abdominal pain occurs in 1 in 20 individuals. However, it is less frequent than in aspirin.

Common Plavix Side effects:

• Diarrhea or constipation


• GI upset


• Headache or dizziness

Seek emergency medical help:

• Severe allergic reactions


• Bloody or black stools


• Unexplained bruising or bleeding, epistaxis


• Severe headache, confusion, dizziness
